FAQs About Cardiology
A cardiologist is a doctor who has chosen to specialise in heart diseases, conditions and treatments. These professionals have taken their general medical education further.
They have spent years studying the way the heart works to provide the best possible heart care, which involves diagnosing irregularities and conditions and creating treatment plans and following the progress of treatment in their patients.
Being a cardiologist in today’s world is more than a career choice – it’s also a choice of rising to the need of the hour to give your life meaning.
While medical science itself is a highly competitive and challenging discipline, cardiology is the most difficult sub-discipline that comes to mind, with the possible exception of neurology. Hence, even among doctors, only the most competitive and capable go on to become cardiologists. Therefore, if you see yourself being one in the future, you must start planning for it early.
One of the things that cardiologists find indispensable to their profession is keeping a cool head and performing patiently in the face of stress and time constraints.
The delay of the split of a second can kill or save a life, and while the thought is undoubtedly stressful, successful cardiologists have trained their bodies to react to said stress with increased calmness and precision. The profession routinely attracts high determination and an eye for difficult feats.
To become a Cardiologist, you must first complete a Bachelor of Medicine degree at university. Medicine courses are open to anyone who is 17 and have completed Year 12 with appropriate prerequisite subjects, including one or more of the following subjects: Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology and Physics.
- Complete the double degree Bachelor of Medical Studies / Doctor of Medicine.
- Alternatively, complete an undergraduate degree followed by a Doctor of Medicine.
- Work in the public hospital system for two years (completing both your Internship and Residency).
- Doctors interested in becoming a Cardiologist can apply to the Royal Australasian College of General Practitioners to undertake further training and ultimately receive a Fellowship which normally takes at least six years of study while working as a doctor. The Advanced Training in Cardiology requires three years of full-time equivalent training. Successful trainees will be admitted to the Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP).
When you visit the cardiologist, they will talk with you to learn more about your symptoms and habits. They may also perform a series of tests to identify specific cardiovascular conditions. Testing on cardiologist patients may include:
- Cardiac catheterisation
- Cardiac biopsy
- Stress test
These tests will evaluate your overall heart health. Once the cardiologist analyses your test results, they will diagnose your condition and recommend a treatment plan. Common cardiology conditions include congenital heart disease, coronary artery disease, and vascular disease.
Cardiologist treatment plans may include prescriptions or advice about diet and lifestyle changes.
You may choose a cardiologist depending on your specific needs. For example:
Performs coronary angiograms and inserts stents for blocked arteries or after a heart attack. Things to consider:
- Will the procedure be performed through the wrist (preferred and recommended) or through the groin?
- If you need a stent, will you receive it during the same procedure, or will you be called for a second procedure for the stent?
- Does the recommendation involve a risky intervention, or are you unsure of the reason you need it?
- Will your procedure be performed in a public hospital or a private hospital?
- Inserts pacemakers, investigates and treats heart rhythm disorders. Things to consider:
- Do you need any special type of pacemaker (such as HIS-bundle, CRT etc.)?
- Do you cardiologists specialise in electrophysiological procedures?
- Will your procedure be performed in a public hospital or a private hospital?
Specialises in Echocardiography, stress testing, reporting other imaging modalities such as CTCA, CT Calcium scoring, and cardiac MRIs.

Peter Barlis, Consultant & Interventional Cardiologist
Peter sees patients with all types of conditions affecting the heart. Peter is a pioneer in interventional cardiology, the specialised field of cardiology dealing with the treatment of blockages in the arteries and stents. In 2009 he introduced a new imaging technique into Australia. Having previously completed fellowships at the prestigious National Heart & Lung Institute, Royal Brompton Hospital London and the Thoraxcentre, the Netherlands. This method, called optical coherence tomography (OCT), uses laser light to scan inside the arteries of the heart and spot areas of disease, cholesterol plaques and is the best method to assess stents in the arteries. Peter leads national and international clinical trials and continues to attract considerable funding to head the cardiovascular innovations research team at the University of Melbourne.
He has published more than 130 peer-reviewed journal articles, is the editor/author of more than 5 textbooks and frequently features in the media discussing new developments in the treatment of heart disease. Peter is also actively involved in the community and public health, including being a Board Director of the Mental Health Foundation Australia (https://www.mhfa.org.au) and the East Timor Heart Fund (https://easttimorheartsfund.org.au) and Member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.
Peter is an internationally-recognised Interventional Cardiologist with the Northern and St Vincent’s Hospitals in Victoria and a Professor of Medicine with the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry & Health Sciences, the University of Melbourne. After graduating from the University of Melbourne, he completed cardiology training at Austin Health, followed by a Master of Public Health with Monash University. In 2006, he secured a fellowship and scholarship at the prestigious Royal Brompton Hospital, London and then completed his PhD at the Thoraxcentre, Erasmus University the Netherlands, on the use of optical coherence tomography (OCT) in cardiology. OCT harnesses the properties of infrared light to look inside blood vessels in ultra-high resolution. Peter has since overseen OCT’s uptake across the region, with over sixty centres in Australia and New Zealand benefiting from his foresight. He is internationally renowned for his interventional and imaging academic output and early development programs for novel therapies in cardiovascular disease. Justin Mariani - Cardiologist Melbourne
03 9288 2210
Associate Professor Justin Mariani
MBBS BMedSci PhD FRACP FCSANZ
Specialist in Interventional Heart Failure
Cardiac Rhythm Device Management
Head, Pacing Service at Alfred Hospital
Adjunct Associate Professor, Central Clinical School, Monash University
VMO Cardiologist at Alfred Hospital and St Vincent’s Private Hospital
A/Prof Justin Mariani was trained as a specialist cardiologist in Melbourne at The Alfred Hospital,. He then completed a PhD at Monash University and the Baker Institute. This was followed with an Interventional Heart Failure Fellowship in Toronto, Canada, at the University of Toronto. He achieved specialist status as a cardiologist in 2006.
His expertise is in all fields of cardiology, but he has special interest and training in heart failure and cardiomyopathies, surgical implantation and follow-up of devices such as pacemakers and defibrillators (and recognised nationally as a leader in cardiac resynchronisation therapy), and clinical and research interest in haemodynamics (pressure) and cardiac catheterisation.
What is Interventional Heart Failure?
Interventional heart failure is a subspecialty of cardiology. It is a field where cardiologists have had extra training and developed expertise in advanced heart failure and also have interventional (i.e. procedural) skills that can manage heart failure problems. This includes special pacemaker and electrical techniques, cardiac catheterisation techniques, and many other procedures.
Not all patients with heart failure need a procedure, and not all patients needing a pacemaker or angiogram have heart failure. The majority of pacemakers that A/Prof Mariani implants and manages are in patients with electrical issues and not heart failure. However, he is able to manage both, which is convenient to patients, especially for complex technologies, such as cardiac resynchronisation therapy and defibrillators.
About Our Practice
A/Prof Mariani, with his team, aims to provide timely and expert care and medical advice for cardiological problems. For an appointment, or for any queries, please contact his main rooms at (03) 99988300.
For outpatient consultations, A/Prof Mariani sees patients in consulting rooms. In this setting, simple and complex cardiovascular and internal medical issues are evaluated, and management plans are formed. This setting also allows time for planning for procedures such as coronary angiograms and pacemaker implantation. Some patients with complicated issues are followed long term to ensure optimal care. For other patients, the initial consultation may be all that is required to provide a framework for management for the patient and their referring doctor.
Being a consultant cardiologist means A/Prof Mariani sees and manages patients presenting with conditions of the heart and blood vessels. These can be established conditions (where we know the problem and are treating it and any further issues) or diagnostic problems which require further evaluation along with management.
Often cardiac conditions may present urgently - in this setting, A/Prof Mariani works in hospitals, including coronary care units, to manage these conditions along with other hospital staff. Sometimes these problems require invasive procedures, many of which A/Prof Mariani actively performs. Where he does not perform these procedures, for example, open heart surgery or AF ablations, A/Prof Mariani works with other specialists such as cardiac surgeons and electrophysiologists to ensure the best outcome for patients and their families.

An ECG is a recording of the electrical activity of the heart. It is taken by placing small sticky probes on the chest, arms and legs of your child. It is not painful, but your child needs to keep still for a few minutes.
An echocardiography machine uses sound waves to create a moving picture of your child’s heart. A trained and accredited sonographer will perform the echo. An instrument (Echo probe) that transmits and receives sound waves will be placed in various positions on your child’s chest. It may take up to one hour to complete the test. It is performed in a semi-dark quiet room. It does not cause any pain, and your child is required to lie still.
A Holter Monitor is a small wearable device that keeps a recording of your child’s heart rhythm. It records the electrical activity with three small sticky probes on the chest. Your child wears the device for one or two days, and the device records all the heartbeats during that time. Your child can continue their normal daily activities when wearing the monitor apart from bathing or showering.

Melbourne Heart Rhythm

Melbourne Heart Rhythm is the arrhythmia service at the Department of Cardiology at the Royal Melbourne Hospital. We are comprised of a team of highly trained and dedicated health care professionals specialising in heart rhythm management. We have a strong focus on patient education and patient-centred care. Our arrhythmia specialists have an international reputation for excellence in arrhythmia research and clinical arrhythmia management.
Dr Gareth Wynn
Dr Gareth Wynn read both Medicine and Anatomical Sciences at the University of Manchester in the UK and completed a Doctor of Medicine (Research) degree, entitled “Improving ablation outcomes in atrial fibrillation: improving procedural efficacy, safety, and patient selection”, at Imperial College London, ranked one of the top ten universities in the world.
After medical training in Manchester, UK, and Wellington, New Zealand, he completed Cardiology and Electrophysiology training at Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital (LHCH), at the time the UK’s largest single-site cardiovascular centre, where he helped Professor Dhiraj Gupta establish LHCH as a major arrhythmia research centre.
Gareth moved to the Royal Melbourne Hospital in 2015, where, along with A/Prof Neil Strathmore, he is one of only two cardiologists in Victoria accredited to extract chronically implanted pacemakers and defibrillators. Dr Wynn and A/Prof Strathmore provide the statewide extraction service both for Victoria and Tasmania.
Gareth has an interest in patient-centred clinical research, especially in atrial fibrillation, and his research is cited in current international guidelines. His research won him the British Heart Rhythm Society’s Young Investigator Award as well as awards from the British Cardiovascular Society and British Heart Foundation.
Gareth specialises in the management of heart rhythm disorders and is a European Heart Rhythm Association (EHRA) Certified Electrophysiology Specialist. As well as device and lead extraction, he performs implantation of pacemakers and defibrillators, including biventricular and subcutaneous devices. He performs EP studies and ablations at a number of private hospitals. He is one of only a very small number of cardiologists in Australia performing venoplasty for device-related venous stenosis/occlusion.
As well as patients with heart rhythm problems (including atrial fibrillation, syncope (collapse), fast or slow heart rates and those needing/with pacemakers or defibrillators), Gareth sees patients with the full range of general cardiology conditions where his dual RACP Fellowship in General Medicine helps him care for even those with complex comorbidities.

About Interventional Cardiology
Interventional cardiology is a branch of cardiology dealing with catheter-based treatments for structural heart diseases. Interventional cardiology uses catheters for the diagnosis and treatment of heart diseases.
The catheter is a long, tubular, flexible instrument inserted through blood vessels in the radial artery in the arm, the femoral artery in the groin or neck, and threaded to the heart. By inserting a catheter, it helps to assess the patient’s heart condition. It can be used to repair a damaged heart valve or clear a clogged artery.
Some interventional cardiology procedures include coronary angioplasty (Stent), balloon valvuloplasty and cardiac ablation.
On this website, you will find information on common conditions, procedures and treatment options in cardiology. We offer information to help prevent or lower your risk of heart disease, angina and improve your heart health.
