The board is surprisingly well-equipped otherwise, housing the standard six SATA 6Gbps ports, pairs of both USB 3.0 and 2.0 headers, and an impressive eight fan headers too, which is more than many far more expensive alternatives. This wasn't identified in the specifications either until we mentioned it to Gigabyte, but the company has at least rectified this, so credit where credit's due. Unless you're using an older PCIe NVMe SSD, though, the lower port is an almost pointless inclusion given it's not compatible with SATA SSDs and will throttle most modern PCIe SSDs to half their maximum throughput. It would make much more sense to offer SATA support in the lower slot as MSI has with its X470 boards, but as the likelihood is that most people would use a single M.2 SSD, we can't get too hung up about it.

Overclocking with a Ryzen 7 1700
With introducing a new chipset, especially concerning specific Intel chipsets, overclocking parameters and how overclocking is done usually changes somewhat, usually minor, but sometimes on a wider scale. The good news with the new X470 chipset is that nothing is different whatsoever concerning AM4 overclocking. Everything from voltages to the multiplier, all the way to overclocking the base clock, is all the same as far as Ryzen processors go.
Our particular AMD Ryzen 1700 eight-core processor sample certainly can't be considered 'good' when overclocking headroom. Still, it is capable of 3.90 GHz at 1.375 V on even the most basic of compatible motherboards. This is fully stabled under Prime95 and OCCT, and as it has been apparent, squeezing out small reductions in used voltage has been possible on boards using better power deliveries and components. As a result, an overclock of 3.90 GHz is easily achievable on all but the worst Ryzen silicon.
The Gigabyte X470 Aorus Ultra Gaming is a nice looking motherboard with improved Vcore and SOC heat sinks over the previous X370 generation. It also features a dual bio, so that's a plus at this price point. Another nice feature of the Aorus Ultra gaming is it comes with a really nice audio solution, especially for your headphones. I'm not an audiophile, but I could hear a nice sound upgrade over some other motherboards I tested. One other plus is the reinforced PCIe slots.
The Gigabyte X470 Aorus Ultra Gaming does have the option to adjust the BCLK, so that's another plus for this motherboard.
The dual bios on the Aorus X470 Ultra are software controlled and don't have a physical switch or even jumper pins. This can pose a problem when trying to get your overclock dialled in.
The VRM is advertised as an 8 phase VRM; however, it's nowhere near an 8 phase in reality. It is not even a doubled 4 phase VRM, and I guess that's fine at this price point. However, I feel that X470 boards should be better equipped for overclocking since that is a big reason why people go the X470 route over B450.
Memory overclocking on the Gigabyte Aorus X470 Gaming is really bad as far as frequency is concerned. While tightening the memory timings is about average.
Another drawback to this board for overclockers is that the X470 Aorus Ultra Gaming dynamic Vcore only goes up to 0.300v. That could be an issue if you are trying to overclock a Ryzen 7 2700.

This one is a bit weird for me. If you plan on doing any heavy overclocking, you are better off looking elsewhere as there are better options at this price point. On the other hand, if you are not planning on overclocking, you could drop down to the GIGABYTE B450 AORUS PRO-WIFI and benefit from the Dual Band 802.11 ac WI-FI. You will also have about 20 extra dollars in your pocket.
