X570 Gaming X: Key Features

x570 gaming x gigabyte

Other than being the chipset of choice for AMD's 3rd-generation Ryzen processors (both were launched in the summer of 2019), the primary highlight is its introduction of PCI Express (PCIe) Gen4 on the consumer market. This interface doubles the theoretical bandwidth for internal devices such as SSDs and graphics cards. As of 2019, this is mainly interesting for users who want faster transfer rates from PCIe 4.0-enabled SSD storage. The Gigabyte X570 Gaming X offers two PCIe 4 M.2 slots combined with 3rd-gen Ryzen CPUs (one is PCIe 3 when used with a 2nd-gen Ryzen). One Thermal Guard M.2 heatsink is also included.

Power delivery is handled by a 10+2-phase digital VRM, which is not as sophisticated as the ones used for the X570 Aorus Elite or Pro. Still, it compares favourably to other affordable boards in the category, such as the MSI X570-A Pro or Gaming Plus.

RAM support on the Gaming X is similar to the vast majority of other X570 ATX motherboards, with four slots for up to 128 GB of DDR4. In addition, the motherboard allows for RAM clocks of up to 4000 MHz (OC Mode), which is a bit lower than the high-end alternatives.

To make things easier for system builders, the board has an integrated I/O shield and a BIOS flashback feature (Q-Flash). In addition, an RGB Fusion 2.0 header is included, but there are no onboard LED effects on the Gaming X. In terms of multi-GPU setups, AMD CrossfireX is supported, but not Nvidia SLI.

Inside the Box

Notice that the GIGABYTE X570 Gaming X packaging was designed to be eye-catching, though it's also tough enough to protect the board inside. The front portion gives you the words GIGABYTE written on the box's upper-left corner while the unit's name is at the centre. Below the board's name is a list of the Gaming X's essential features, while the box's sides give you the same information about the motherboard. Finally, the back of the box gives you more details about the board's features, plus more details about the GIGABYTE X570 Gaming X.

Looking inside, you'll immediately see the GIGABYTE X570 Gaming X encased in plastic. Under the board are SATA cables, an M.2 standoff, the warranty commitment card, user manual, and a driver disk.

While the VRMs were within limits, we did spot that the all-core boost was often south of 4GHz at stock speed, which means that if multi-threaded performance is your goal, a sneaky manual overclock could well be worth doing. Thankfully, we hit 4.3GHz with 1.425V, and while temperatures were hitting the high 80s after a five-minute load test, this is just our quick-fire go-to voltage - you'll likely need less given more time and a bit of fine-tuning.

Performance Analysis

That lowly all-core boost did have an impact on multi-threaded performance, with the slowest Cinebench and joint slowest Blender scores we've seen, but the single-threaded performance remained competitive. However, the gremlins returned with Far Cry 5, whose 99th percentile was slightly off the pace. Strangely, though, it matched the very high frame rates of the X570 Aorus Master once overclocked, something that also fixed its mediocre Cinebench score, which rose to second place, while in Blender, it was joint first place.

RGB LED Headers & Rear Panel

The GIGABYTE X570 Gaming X doesn't come with standard RGBs, but for necessary illuminations in the future, there are RGB LED headers on the PCB that aids the addressable 4-pin 12V and 3-pin LED strips.

Its rear panel is a regular assortment of inputs and outputs without USB 3.1 G2 connections. For USB support, what's present are four USB 3.1 G1 Type-A ports and two USB 2.0 ports. The rear panel also has an HDMI video output for compatible Ryzen APUs; other than that, there are three 3.5-millimetre audio jacks driven by the Realtek ALC 887 HD audio codec plus a Realtek RTL-8111H Ethernet port.

The GIGABYTE X570 Gaming X comes with a well-made design that isn't too challenging. It has a better arrangement than the MSI boards known to have fan headers in awkward positions. The motherboard only has four fan headers and none on the board's lower-half area and the 24-pin connector's side.

GIGABYTE X570 Gaming X Conclusion

After reading through our GIGABYTE X570 Gaming X review, you've learned that the X570 Gaming X comes with aesthetics, an efficient cooling system, and a lot of unique features. Most importantly, it's an exceptional gaming motherboard that delivers the best performance that money could buy. The most notable thing about this motherboard is its cooling performance and quietness even while operating on a heavy load. Aside from that, it truly delivers premium-quality sound while gaming, which is excellent for a more realistic experience. In addition, X570 Gaming X offers all of these at an affordable price.

The GIGABYTE X570 Gaming X is an excellent choice if you're looking for an affordable yet high-performance motherboard. It's one of the budget-friendly motherboards that will meet all your needs while being ready for updates for technologies in the future. It's the best option for entry-level users who are planning to create a build that matches the performance of high-end gaming systems.

We were quite excited by the X570 Gaming X when we saw its alternative specifications compared to the MSI board. The M.2 SSD and I/O shroud certainly do a good job of bolstering aesthetics, its layout is slightly better, and it keeps its VRMs a bit cooler too, but the lack of USB 3.1 Gen 2 and Type-C support, as well as lowly audio and the bare minimum of audio jacks, fan headers, and USB ports, meaning that while it's slightly better in some areas, overall the two boards are actually evenly matched in our eyes. This means that if you're looking for a cheap way to own an X570 board and PCIe 4.0 SSD, both are recommended, albeit only just, and you'll need to think about your priorities when deciding between the two. Still, we'd probably lean towards the MSI board ourselves because of the better audio and I/O.

It's also well worth remembering that X470 motherboards with far superior feature sets are available for the same price (or less) and still support 3rd Gen Ryzen CPUs, so if your motherboard budget cannot stretch past $200, we'd seriously recommend considering just how much you need PCIe 4.0 support over everything else.
