The Savoy Hotel on Little Collins has reconnected with its rich history following substantial renovations. The building has a rich history filled with notable patrons, events, and proprietors. It has had many incarnations, from its origins in the 1880s to its Art Deco reincarnation as The Alexander Hotel in the 1920s to its time as Melbourne's iconic Savoy Plaza in the 1960s.
The structure, which is located on Spencer Street across from Southern Cross Station, was first used as Alexander's Family Hotel in 1866. Three storeys of a Victorian building with classically detailed architecture were created by Charles Alexander. James Richardson, the building's new owner, lavished £300,000 on it in 1926, along with another £50,000 on furnishings and fixtures for a 20th-century renovation with an American flair.
The Hotel Alexander was the first hotel in Australia to have temperature-controlled rooms and ensuite bathrooms thanks to his design partner Leslie M Perrott's idea. Premier Hogan formally unveiled the 200-room Hotel Alexander on January 31, 1928. Leslie M. Perrott later created the Chevron Hotel and Hotel Australia, which in the 1940s became Melbourne's social hub.
In 1951, the Federal Hotel group paid £450,000 to purchase the Alexander Hotel, renaming it the Savoy-Plaza. Over the following ten years, maître d' Albert Argenti rose to fame in Melbourne by entertaining a who's who of worldwide show business, including Louis Armstrong, Nat King Cole, and Ella Fitzgerald. There, the careers of several well-known Australians had their starts, including John Farnham, Rolf Harris, and the Seekers.
