Still, it has also reflected broader societal attitudes about personal hygiene, body exposure, and modesty, and whether or not it was appropriate for women to participate in active sports.
Swimming and bathing were common activities in the ancient world, and the Romans built public baths in even the most remote parts of their empire. After declining during the Middle Ages, bathing was revived in the seventeenth century, when it became popular as a medicinal treatment.
At spas, where bathers sought out the warm mineral waters for their therapeutic effects, linen bathing garments—knee-length drawers and waistcoats for men, and long-sleeved linen smocks or chemises for women—were in use by the late seventeenth century.
These garments were worn for modesty rather than appearance and could be hired from the baths by those who did not wish to purchase their own.

Commonly Used Fabrics
Nylon is probably the most common material used in swimwear as it is extremely strong, lightweight, and fits the body nicely and is quick drying. The downside is that Nylon doesn't hold dye particularly well, so it will often be mixed with other fabrics to help retain colour or treated to be sun and chlorine resistant (see below for more on this).
Lycra can be found in almost every quality swimsuit due to its great fit and elasticity but also tends to be mixed with other materials due to it not being the most comfortable fabric in high quantities and again must be treated to withstand the effects of chlorine.
Cotton rarely features in high-quality swimwear as it does not provide a very good fit, tends to sag after time and holds water - this is more commonly found in cheap or fashionable swimwear.
Polyester is used for its chlorine-resistant and fade-resistant properties and is often mixed with other materials.
PBT (Polybutylene Terephthalate) is also used due to its natural stretch and chlorine-resistant properties. It is used by specialist manufacturers, like Speedo and Arena. When incorporated into a swimsuit, polyurethane compresses the skin with the right amount of pressure, preventing excessive friction and improving your aerodynamic performance.
Regardless of what material your swimwear is made of, we recommend caring for it properly, i.e. rinsing it when you leave the pool, sea or lake and treating it with the recommended care when washing.
Chlorine Resistance
Most good swim brands use some grade of chlorine resistant material when constructing swimwear, especially if it is destined for use in a pool, as chlorine is routinely added to swimming pools to keep them free from any bacteria that could be hazardous to human health.
The first downside to chlorine is that you'll notice - it smells pretty bad, and it can also irritate sensitive skin and cause itching. It can also make your swimsuit degrade faster.
Often people don't put two and two together as to why their swimsuit has faded dramatically, become worn out and tired looking after what seems like very little use.
You'll find this quickly apparent if you buy a swimsuit that is meant to be more of a fashion piece to parade around in or a cheap and cheerful one from your local supermarket rather than a workhorse meant for training.
Dedicated swim brands put a lot of effort into constructing swimwear resistant to the effects of chlorine, so their customers get better value for their money and find that their swimwear lasts and lasts even if used regularly.
Look out for designs that use 100% chlorine resistant fabric, such as Speedo's Endurance+ and Zoggs Aqualast. Some swim brands offer materials with a good degree of chlorine resistance but are not 100%, such as the Maru Pacer fabric.
Drag Reducing Material
If you're a competitive swimmer or participate in sports such as Triathlon, your swimwear can enhance your performance. However, excessive drag can slow you down significantly, and generally speaking, the bulkier the material, the more drag it will create.
Well-established brands like Speedo and Arena use low-drag materials in their high-tech swimwear to improve how you glide through the water inspired by the skins of marine animals. These materials often have the bonus of quick-drying, which is useful for sports with an out-of-water leg, as the water will not be held in the material and weigh you down.
Look out for materials such as Fastskin and LZR Racer Elite from Speedo and Carbon Pro MK2 from Arena incorporated into designs that cover the arms and legs. Bear in mind that the suit you choose must be FINA approved to use in certain competitions.
Other Aspects to Consider
It is important to consider the degree of friction that the material will produce when in touch with your skin. This is particularly important because swimming requires repetitive movements, especially if you are training or are a competitive swimmer.
Excessive friction can leave marks or even sores on your skin, taking away the enjoyment of the experience and reducing your performance levels.
Due to this reason, it is important to look for swimsuits that are made with low-friction materials, such as the nylon-elastane combination used in some Speedo high-performance swimsuits.

RECYCLED FABRIC
A non-profit organization called Healthy Seas started leading volunteer-led diving expeditions in 2013 to remove trashed fishing nets and other plastic garbage from our oceans. The remaining plastic trash is then converted into Econyl® regenerated nylon using entirely renewable energy.
The lovely recycled fabric we use to construct our swimwear is then made from Econyl®. Our swimwear is highly sustainable and supports a circular economy because it is produced in Italy using only renewable energy and has the possibility to be recycled indefinitely. Every Baaby item, including our printed textiles, is created entirely of recycled fabric, both for the outer fabric and the lining.
NO PLASTIC
We do not mail orders wrapped in plastic and we do not receive our swimsuits from our manufacturers in any plastic.
FABRIC PRINTING
A nearby Australian printer prints our fabrics in small batches to prevent overprinting and fabric wastage. To minimize environmental damage, they employ non-toxic water-based pigments. Considering that all fabric is printed digitally to provide a precise and exact print, less fabric is lost during color testing than with screen printing, which can need a lot of trial and error to achieve the desired print.

Swimwear Fabrics
Since Shapes in the Sand first went on sale in 2013, our swimwear has been produced using materials that promote circularity. We want to choose fabrics that will last and be appropriate for their intended use in addition to taking the environment into account.
Our present primary fibers are a part of a closed-loop system where pre- and post-consumer materials are recycled to give them new life. As we watch our swimsuits come to life from their 100% regenerated fibre made from abandoned ghost fishing nets and other pre and post-consumer materials, our cooperation with ECONYL® continues to be a crucial one.
In 2018 we introduced an industry-first fibre known as EVO®. This 100% bio-based fibre is made from the oil of the castor bean. Ecologically sound production methods: a 20% reduction in water use and a 20% reduction in CO2 emissions (compared to the same fabric created with standard polyamide).

BAIIA - Ethical Swimwear Brand Melbourne
Our Story
The beliefs, education, and upbringing of creator Amber were combined to create Baiia. The bikini Amber, 4, borrowed from her elder sister Jasmine felt the most secure, fearless, and liberating while growing up between Australia and the Solomon Islands. Like other powerful women in her life, she felt empowered by this swimsuit to explore her surroundings and assume total control of herself.
Amber pursued one of her greatest and most enduring hobbies by studying fashion design. She was worried about sliding into the trap of only producing items that are intended for "looking beautiful" rather than "feeling good," even though she enjoyed the knowledge she had acquired. So she let it go.
Amber started writing about CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) in the fashion industry and where it was lacking after traveling the world and earning a second degree, something she now understood all too much about. Amber moved back to designing after having a particularly disempowering experience buying swimwear and realizing that writing wasn't her passion. She was aware that the design flaw, not her own body, was to blame for her overwhelming sense of inadequacy. She simply needed a better swimsuit, so she started making one for herself. Baiia was born with a strong foundation in fashion, commerce, and design as well as a rising propensity toward always acting morally.
After three years, Baiia has garnered recognition for its creative and environmentally friendly designs, been featured in prestigious Australian publications and blogs, and—most importantly—dressed women all over the world while upholding our core principles. Amber currently works with a small group of other innovative and ambitious women who share her passion for Baiia's cause.
Sustainable Fibres & Dyes
Between 2000 and 2010, the amount of plastic (including synthetic fabric) manufactured was comparable to the total amount made during the course of the previous century. This plastic, which was probably only used once or twice, was dumped in landfills where it will continue to produce toxins for the next few thousand years. How therefore can we contribute to its correction? Only the best recycled synthetic textiles are used by us.
Our soft and long-lasting recycled nylon is created in Italy from post-consumer and industrial waste, including textiles, carpets, plastic bottles, and fishnets, which would otherwise poison our precious land and oceans. The leading organization in the world for evaluating fabrics to control dangerous compounds has certified it as meeting Standard 100. Our fabric vendor produces Nylon 6 from completely recycled waste materials using the most effective industrial technique in the world.
Meet the Makers
We are delighted to say that our swimwear collection is created in China by very skilled dressmakers. We've teamed up with a fantastic producer who actually cares about worker welfare, environmental concerns, and ethics and sustainability. Their costs have increased as a result of their decision to adopt a more moral approach to corporate social responsibility, and they have lost many fashion labels to more affordable producers in other Asian nations. Baiia believed it was our duty to back a company that is doing the right thing but is losing support. When it comes to the people we work with, Baiia has no racial bias. Our strategy was inspired by the appreciation of high-quality products since if something is high-quality, you'll wear it to death.

It started with AN IDEA ...
I started Bondi Joe in 2018 after spending years looking in vain for the ideal pair of swim trunks. I've worn swimsuits from a lot of different brands throughout the years, so why do they all have that bothersome mesh lining? Walking out to the beach feels OK for the first ten minutes, but as soon as they become wet, they start to hurt. It's too much trouble to pack a change of clothes to the beach. The only options were boardshorts from surf brands, but are those truly me because I've never been a surfer?
I wanted to design the ideal pair of fashionable, mesh-lining-free swim trunks because I have a business background and experience in digital and product development. As a result, Bondi Joe was created.

This beach has it all, including the recognizable white sand, the Bondi Icebergs pool, and the well-known lifeguards. We aim to create swimwear with distinctive patterns, environmental awareness, and an unbroken focus on comfort that will eventually match that iconic status.
We gave it the name Joe because we like how it suggests the typical Australian. Beach showoffs and attention seekers are not welcome here. We support real men with real bodies who yet value ultimate comfort and want to look beautiful at the beach!
And why is the logo a seagull? Considering that seagulls are the most persistent beach visitors, always present regardless of the weather and always on the lookout for a secret chip from a tourist. We won't stop until you're thrilled with your swimwear. All of our swim trunks bear the names of Bondi Beach streets. When we mail orders to clients who reside on these streets, we simply adore it!

IIXIIST is now Frankii Swim. In 2013, Frankii Swim was founded. She was a needy birth. She was the answer to our prayers for a good swim, and she did not let us down when she showed up.
We have developed over the years, you, as our consumer, have evolved with time, and Frankii Swim has done the same. She is not the familiar brand that she once was. She has evolved, prospered, and expanded past her modest beginnings. Our brand needs to be revolutionized. to develop into a brand that not only represents but also inspires change. A name that challenges limits and stands for strength. We questioned where and how we belonged. Did we consider our coping mechanisms as individuals and as a brand? How do we get here? That was the query that gave origin to our new name.

Since 2017, we've been offering our busty clients gorgeous, opulent swimwear and lingerie. MARVELL LANE is committed to creating lovely swimwear and lingerie that makes our beautiful females look wonderful and feel amazing by fusing our principles of sustainability, superior workmanship, and a youthful, feminine design aesthetic. We take pride in our small size. We create one collection annually, taking care to minimize our negative effects on the environment while yet giving our customers the greatest possible product. Larger is not usually better, with the exception of breasts!
How did MARVELL LANE come to life?
For curvy ladies with chest sizes 8D to 16H, MARVELL LANE is the intersection of fashion and utility. Simply put, our busts grow fuller. Our founder, Rachael Calvert, has an 8G bust, and from a very young age, she discovered the lack of functional and fashionable pieces on the market when it came to swimwear. She dreaded entering a store just to be directed to the clearance area, where the oldest and ugliest bras in her size were, to be entirely honest. We don't necessarily need thick straps, big cups, and additional fabric just because we have D+ busts.
In Byron Bay in 2017, MARVELL LANE was born here. Our goal is to provide ethically and sustainably created clothing that inspires confidence, sex, and support in our customers. Our clothing embraces tiny straps and back bands, high-quality materials and finishes, but most importantly, our 8D-16H clothing is made to celebrate and accentuate our beautiful curves.

OUR STORY
Founding members of Spell, Isabella Pennefather and Elizabeth Abegg, in front of a wooden table covered in design materials and clothing. Both founders are dressed in Spell attire. A modern-bohemian clothing line is called Spell. Two sisters met again in the lovely beach town of Byron Bay, Australia, to continue a voyage they'd started together years earlier when they were kids. This is where the narrative began. Inspired by far-off locales, antique finds, and youthful memories
The sisters' designs pay homage to their hippie parents, a leather craftsman and a potter, who in the 1970s moved around town in pursuit of their own wild dreams. They also pay homage to their Latvian grandparents, who fled war-torn Europe in search of America but ended up in a dusty refugee camp in Australia.
The sisters' own youth is most strongly evoked by Spell's voluminous, feminine clothes, love of turquoise, florals, and vintage lace. Spell appeals to the sense of freedom, beauty, and nostalgia that so perfectly encapsulates the feminine soul. Spell brings to life that vivid, expressive side of you that shows up while you're on vacation or mid-strut at a festival, no matter where you are.
All clothes are ethically made in factories throughout the world after being proudly developed and sampled in Byron Bay's Arts & Industry Estate.
OUR BRAND NAME
We are in the process of changing Spell & The G*psy Collective to SPELL as our brand name. We came up with the name for our company more than 10 years ago, drawing inspiration from the Fleetwood Mac song and the way of life we thought it described. We have discovered over the past ten years that this word, especially when used without malice, can hurt others who perceive it as a racial slur. You can learn more about how we appreciate and honor the Roma/Romani people here. We also apologize to our community and anybody else it may have harmed.
We are working with our legal and trademarking teams to stop utilizing this word in our brand name, but because "SPELL" is a very popular word on its own, it has been challenging from a trademarking standpoint to remove "and the G*psy Collective" and still be able to legally do business in some regions. We have already made the change digitally (we are SPELL on our website and all socials), are currently in the final stages of rolling out the rebrand for our store signage which will happen in early 2021 and for our packaging/swing/garment tags which will roll out mid-2021 (as part of our sustainability values, we are aiming to minimise the need to destroy existing tags)
