twotonmax is a sensitively transformed, beautifully detailed industrial warehouse located in North Melbourne. Hidden behind an anonymous street front, it is a blank canvas you can quickly and easily transform. This is a rare opportunity to create a unique event with your own choice of caterer and limitless options for decorating and furnishing the room.

The venue’s stunning burnished concrete floor, neutral white walls and discrete lighting are easily enhanced with additional fixtures as required. An oversize marble service bar is coupled with a commercial kitchen, sparkling bathrooms, air conditioning and other facilities, all well integrated into the venue. The vintage overhead crane (two-ton max capacity) can be called into duty should it be required.

Direct street access allows for easy bump-in, ample rigging points and flexible electrical layout make it an easy venue to quickly and effectively tailor. The venue offers you the opportunity to create a unique event in the style you choose.

Just a few years ago, two to max was a small part of a rambling industrial workshop involved in the manufacture of generator equipment. Although its proportions seem generous for its current use, it was woefully inadequate for the daily movements of bulky items – sometimes as big as shipping containers. Once the heavy engineering business had vacated the building in favour of wide roads and high clearance, the building that remained was able to tell a long story of hard work.

By looking at the array of columns and beams, the patchwork of brick and concrete floors, and the piecemeal arrangement of driveways and overhead cranes, it was possible to track changes over time and understand the chapters of the building’s life.

In the process of resurrecting useful spaces from the industrial chaos that had evolved seemingly without a plan, one area immediately stood apart. Beneath a thick layer of diesel soot, ignoring the distraction of brackets, shelving units, and decades of redundant plumbing conduits and electrical wires, was a relatively unmolested gem. Cleaning, careful removal of clutter and the addition of modern infrastructure have all occurred without major disruption to the original building. Wherever possible, materials have been recycled and redeployed to new use, so they’re still part of the evolutionary story.

The area now occupied by twotonmax was originally built around 1910-1920. During its century of working life, it has housed a company that manufactured ship’s boilers, then general welding/boiler making, then heavy industrial roller shutters, and finally the generator business. During each period, the building was modified to suit the work of the day. Large pulleys, beautifully detailed in steel and laminated timber, hang overhead as a reminder of a time when enormous engines drove canvas belts, which in turn gave motive power to equipment in the workshop.

When electricity became available, the travelling overhead crane was added to the mix. Its scarred metal and elegantly efficient design were an important influence on the style and tone of the venue. The ever-present spectre of the yellow crane, spanning the entire space and waiting patiently to be called into action, left no doubt the venue should be named in its honour.

The Hawthorn Tramway Trust purchased 137 acres of land from Mrs Eliza Welch (of the Ball and Welch Department stores) under the condition it was to be used as a public park. Wattle Park opened on 31 March 1917 when Sir Arthur Stanley planted a Golden Wattle and named the park. Planning and development of the park started in the 1920s and 30s, with a plantation of 12,000 wattle trees between 1926 and 1928. The Wattle Park Chalet was completed by Tramways Architect Alan G. Monsbourgh in 1928.

A 9-hole golf course opened at Wattle Park in October 1937, with tennis courts, sports oval, picnic areas and children’s playgrounds following soon after. The park contains areas of indigenous remnant bushland and has been nominated for being regionally significant for its high diversity of common native fauna in a suburban environment.

Built-in 1928 by master craftsmen using materials salvaged from historic public buildings, the Chalet is listed on both the Heritage Victoria and National Trust Registers. The Chalet has operated continuously since it opened and is the only recorded café, dance hall, wedding reception venue and conference venue dating from the 1920s that remains operational in its original form.

The surrounding parkland also has historical significance. The Lone Pine tree across from the Chalet is included on the National Trusts Significant Tree Register. Wattle Park and its Chalet are important local landmarks and attract more than 500,000 visitors annually.

A Brief History Lesson

Overnewton castle was built by William Taylor in 1849. The Scotsman bought 13,000 acres of rich grazing land just west of the Keilor township. Taylor built a simple single-storey bluestone colonial-style homestead. This consisted of 6 rooms with large shuttered windows and wide verandahs. The homestead was positioned on a gentle slope overlooking Keilor and afforded extensive views of the surrounding countryside.

During the 1850’s Keilor became an important and busy stopover for travellers on their way to the Victorian Goldfields. This included the building of 2 schools, a new bridge and a new hotel.

It was not until William Taylor returned from a trip to Scotland in 1859 that the grandeur of his dreams became apparent. He set about turning the functional colonial homestead into a miniature Scottish Baronial Castle. The Stately two-storeyed wing was added, along with the bluestone Dairy & Butcher Shop and the Private Billiard room now used as a chapel for wedding ceremonies.

Overnewton is built in the Victorian Tudor style, inspired by 16th century English & Scottish architecture. The Scottish baronial style is characterised by its rough-textured masonry, steeped pitched roofs and overhanging battlement corner turrets. The candle snuffer roofs show the influence of French architecture. The bluestone walls were quarried on the estate and rendered with a yellow gravel and stucco finish. Above the large windows of the master bedroom is the Taylor family crest – a mailed arm and fist enclosing a dagger and the motto “Semper Fidelis” (always faithful), and above several other windows are the carved initials of HT, T 1859 and WT.

After the completion of this wing, the homestead consisted of over 35 rooms, including 7 bedrooms (the master room included a small circular room and a dressing room), a schoolroom, a library, a drawing-room, 2 kitchens, 5 servants rooms and the Billiard room. There are still many original features such as tiles in the bathrooms, claw foot bath and the old IXL wood stove in the kitchen. Several outbuildings on the estate include a bluestone butchery and dairy, lamp room, boot room, coach house, stables, woolshed, shearing sheds, and machine shed.

William Taylor passed away in 1903, aged 85, and six months later, his wife, Helen, aged 71, passed away. Their eldest son William Henry continued to manage the estate until he passed away in 1939, aged 81 and his wife, Beatrice, in 1948. The estate remained in the Taylor family until 1959.

The Carr Family purchased Overnewton in 1959. They raised their three children on the property using part of it as a family home, and the downstairs rooms were used as a wedding reception centre.

In 1975 Dr L. J. Norton purchased Overnewton Estate to raise his own family on the property. Since then, there have been many upgrades and changes to the property, including mains water in 1976, a fire in 1980 burnt the old timber stables. Dr Norton purchased back 6 acres of land, which included a drystone wall and some of the original outbuildings.

The years have been kind to Overnewton. Today it remains much the same as when it was originally built. Hidden away amongst the old trees, it has seen many changes throughout the years. Gone are the days of horse and carriages, gaslight and servants, but the old world grace and charm along with the elegance, grandeur and atmosphere of a bygone era still remain. Having been restored over the years and an elegant dining room added to the estate, this is definitely a hidden treasure.

Following a successful 12 years of trading, what is now known as the Grand Ballroom was constructed onto what was the sprawling grounds and circular driveway of the original home. Having worked in the advertising and marketing field for over 2 decades, our Director Nash Teelow has sat through her fair share of research groups, offsite strategy days and conferences.

Tired of what was being offered – cold, uninspiring and soulless rooms that hindered creative thinking and natural interaction, Nash realised there was a need for a space that was beautifully authentic, genuine and one that encouraged openness. Taking the brave leap out of the security of the corporate world, Nash embarked on an incredible journey.

After 12 months of searching, she came across the space that is now called Canvas House. Not afraid of hard work, Nash was on the tools alongside the builders, ensuring that no stone was left unturned and that her vision for space came to life. Six months later, Canvas House was launched and has quickly become one of Melbourne hottest venues.

It’s all in a name

We are often asked how the name Canvas House was born. People often mistakenly think our name is a subtle reference to the blank canvas nature of the space and its ability to be easily and quickly transformed. In fact, when looking for a name, Nash wanted it to reference the history of South Melbourne.

The area, now known as South Melbourne, was first settled by the Europeans in the 1840s and became known as Emerald Hill. During the Victorian Gold Rush of 1851, a tent city known as Canvas Town was established, and the area soon became home to tens of thousands of migrants from around the world.

When working on the design of the space, Nash knew that she needed to incorporate House into the name, and upon learning the history of the area, she knew immediately that Canvas House was not only a way to pay homage but to celebrate the purpose of the space - bringing people together.

A Roomy Fit

It sounds obvious, but when it comes to what you should look for in your wedding venue, this is so important. Ensure the room or space is large enough to accommodate the number of people on your guest list. The site may look enormous when it’s empty, but wedding essentials—tables, chairs, a buffet, bar, the band or DJ setup, the dance floor—will fill it quickly. And, of course, your guests will need some elbow room. The best way to assess the size of a site is to see it when another wedding (with a similar guest list size) is all set up. On the other hand, if you decide that a particular site, like your favourite bar or your parents’ garden, is the only place you want to celebrate, you can always work backward and tailor your guest list to match the venue.

Eating, Drinking and Partying Areas

There should be logical places within the venue where guests can eat, drink, mingle and dance. When you’re standing in the space, try to envision where each activity would happen (especially if your ceremony will also be there). If a room is too small to separate into sections accordingly, you might feel cramped if space has an odd configuration (like it’s shaped like an S, for example) that could compromise your party’s flow. We always recommend working with an event planning pro to help you map out space if you’re having trouble. Also, note the locations of columns or other obstructions in the room—will they block your guests’ views of the dance floor, the cake table, or where speeches will be read?


Privacy varies widely by the venue, as does the importance couples place on it. If you’re having a daytime event in a public spot, such as a park, beach or botanical garden, be prepared for strangers to trek past your party. They may smile, wave and come by to offer their good wishes. If you’re okay with that, book your dream venue. If not, consider a more secluded alternative like a lawn on a private estate or golf course.

This caveat isn’t just for outdoor weddings, though. Banquet halls and hotels often hold more than one affair at a time. Keep in mind that your venue will also serve as a backdrop to the events taking place, so you should consider the view. What will your guests see when they walk into the room? Whether it’s your city skyline, a stunning vista of rolling mountains or crashing waves, locations with exceptional views is always a plus. If there’s no “view” per se, look to a place’s décor or architectural details. Artwork on the walls, fine Persian rugs on the floors, period furniture in the corners or an amazing crystal chandelier as the room’s centrepiece all give your reception site that something extra.

The Proper Palette

If you’re considering a certain theme and colour palette for your party, make sure the site’s existing, nonremovable décor doesn’t clash with your vision. The venue doesn’t have to be done in the exact colours as your planned decorations, but the walls, carpets, chairs and curtains shouldn’t drastically conflict with your party’s mood or theme. If planning to marry during the high summer, be sure to give your guests plenty of notice too. You don’t want to find out half of your loved ones can’t make it because they’re away on holiday. The same is true of suppliers, even though many will try to remain available for the busy wedding season.

Also, summer weather is unpredictable! So don’t count on a balmy summer’s day even if you plan to get married well into August. Although, we can get lucky and have some beautiful long summers days and warm evenings. Pick a venue with plenty of gardens if you want to take advantage of this. This is the perfect opportunity for a marquee as you get the best of both worlds.

If you are lucky, the weather will still be fairly mild, and late afternoon sunlight will make for stunning photographs. A September wedding will give you the lowest chance of rain on your wedding day than any other month in the whole year, and temperatures still average a healthy 20°C at midday.
