In the heart of Melbourne’s iconic South Melbourne Market, you will find Agathé Pâtisserie. Famed for their authentic French pastries and cakes, here you’ll be able to bask in awe of their wide selection of golden brown pastries, airy croissants and gleaming fruit tarts. You’re going to want to try them all. Our personal favourites include Agathé’s traditional French croissant, Pain Au Chocolat, and fantastic Apple Turnover coated with a layer of granulated sugar. Agathé also loves incorporating non-traditional French ingredients into their pastries, such as their bright green Pandan Croissant or Matcha Almond Croissant Slice. Always flakey, always delicious; you can’t go wrong with Agathé Pâtisserie.
Are you still craving the French experience? Then head over to this acclaimed patisserie at South Melbourne market or to its sister location in the Royal Arcade. Yes, you’ll find some unique and delicious Melbourne cakes, but you’ll also find the city’s (possibly the continent’s) best croissants.

Since then, Brunetti continues to show their dedication to pastry through their mouthwatering selection of celebration cakes, bite-sized desserts, gelato and, of course, excellent Italian-style coffee from the bar. Their stunning Flinders Lane location is the perfect spot for large groups for any occasion. This charming bakery feels like it should exist in a children’s storybook. Beatrix Bakes use high-quality and seasonal ingredients from local Australian producers and farmers markets. The powerhouse behind these delicious cakes is Nat Paull, who has brought many years of experience in the pastry game and irreverent creativity to the bakery. Offering an expansive selection of delicious and innovative sweet offerings, grab a slice of something nostalgic like their Lemon Tart, Hummingbird Layer Cake or Sponge Cake with Passionfruit Curd. Or, for something different, try their Sour Cream Cheesecake with fresh strawberry sauce and cookie crumb or their Salted Dulce De Leche Cheesecake. Hungry yet?
One of Melbourne’s top cake makers goes by the name of Natalie Paull, and she runs this famous corner bakery, where the selections change each day. Beat the crowd, and you might be able to score a slice of Paull’s legendary sour cream chocolate cake, which many say is the best chocolate cake in all of Melbourne. No matter what you order here, it’s going to be purposefully basic and utterly fantastic.

Large cakes are the name of the game, and most of the ordering is down online or by phone, but there’s also a café-style retail store where you can grab a delicious slice and a hot cup of coffee.

Miss Trixie Drinks Tea
Visionary Alice Bennett created Miss Trixie Drinks Tea. A concept originally distributed as a blog was a way to show her family and friends her weekend baking. It turned into said family and friends drooling over her creations and phoning her at ridiculous hours in the night to satisfy their cravings. So, she started to box up her cakes and take them to the people who craved them—starting Miss Trixie Drinks Tea, because you have to give the people what they want, which appears to be cake.

At Candied Bakery, you’ll find instant and indulgent classics, some of which skew the line between cake and pie. That’s certainly the case with the Red Velvet Cheesecake Pie, which features a crushed Oreo cookie crust and mounds of cream cheese frosting. Technicalities aside, we’re calling it cake and one of the best cakes in Melbourne at that!

Sucre du jour
Sucre du jour is a humble bakery, patisserie cafe and cake shop situated in the bustling suburb of Camberwell Melbourne. Born from the dreams and hopes of a young couple trying to make it, both Eigen Ting and Josephin Tan have worked in notable establishments ranging from Michelin starred restaurants to luxury hotels such as Joël Robuchon, Dinner by Heston Blumenthal, Raffles Hotel and Shangri-La Hotel, just to name a few.
The couple specialises in fine and delicate pastries; just take a look at their website, and it’s enough to blow your mind. Intricate details are found across the board as they aim to bring back the chic feel you experience whilst walking down the streets of Paris.

Monarch Cakes know a thing or two about making the best cakes in Melbourne. After all, they’ve been in the baking business for over 80 years. Many of the recipes originated from the original shop in Poland, where they were brought to Australia, being used here ever since. A cake was made from fresh, raw ingredients such as butter, flour, eggs, and sugar. Today many have sacrificed that old fashioned flavour to baking more quickly and cheaply. Monarch Cakes would never dream of doing such a thing! Highlights include the Chocolate Kooglhoupf and 100-year-old baked cheesecake.
