Frequently Asked Questions

First, death must be officially pronounced by someone with the authority to do so. If death occurred in your home, unattended by medical personnel, an official such as the sheriff or county coroner must be called to your home to officially pronounce death. If your loved one was terminally ill and under hospice care, the hospice nurse is usually authorized to make the official pronouncement. When death occurs in a hospital, the doctor will pronounce death.
Once death is officially pronounced, the funeral home is contacted to arrange for removal of the deceased body.

Other than the family, there are veteran, union, and other organizational benefits to pay for funerals, including, in certain instances, a lump sum death payment from Social Security. In most states, some form of public aid allowances are available from either the state, county, or city or a combination.

Family members typically sit in the first row. Depending on how many family members attend or how large a family is, this may fill the first few rows. Family member's may attend a funeral to pay their respects to the deceased but not want to associate with other members of the family as a result of divorce or past grievances. If this is the case, it is not uncommon to see family members sit in separate sections or to occupy the first rows on the right and left side of the venue.

If there is a viewing prior to the funeral service, visit with the family and pay your respects. Once this is done you can sit down. If there is not a viewing prior to the funeral service, you can sit down in a chair, aisle, or pew as soon as you arrive. Try to remain silent. If you are in a place of worship that has kneelers, do not allow them to drop or slam on the ground.

Once you're seated, stay seated. Unless you absolutely must use the restroom, remain in your seat until the pallbearers, immediate family and other family members leave. Even if you've attended the memorial service but won't be attending the graveside service, wait to leave your seat. However, don't wait to leave the parking lot if you won't be part of the funeral procession. You'll need to exit the parking lot so that the funeral procession can commence.

If there is no seating available, you can stand. If seating is limited and an elderly individual, pregnant woman, or intensely grieving person is standing, it is a polite gesture to offer that person your seat.

The Stages of The Journey

The process of arranging a funeral can be a daunting and emotional one and in order to help you find the information you need during this difficult time, we have broken up The Funeral Journey into 5 key stages. Each stage is designed to provide important and relevant information when you need it most.

Remember that no matter what stage of the journey you are in, our team of dedicated and understanding professionals are here 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to guide and support you in any way we can.

Planning Ahead

While no-one wants to think about their death, pre-planning your funeral gives you the peace of mind to know that when the time comes, your family will be guided with professional support, providing a much-needed sense of comfort.

Time Of Death

Few of us are prepared when a death occurs and we often need support and assistance both at the initial time of death and throughout the funeral planning process, as well as continued support as we come to terms with the loss.

The Funeral Arrangement

A funeral service is the customary way to recognise death and allows us to honour and show respect for the dead as well as to help those left behind begin the process of grief recovery.

The Funeral Service

A funeral ceremony helps to publicly acknowledge the reality of the death, and when shared with friends and family it encourages the expression of grief.

After The Funeral

Grief is a natural response to loss. It's important to remember that grief and mourning is a process and not an event.

Modern, Purpose Built Facilities, Two Locations.

Our spacious, modern Chapel is located in Chelsea Heights and is surrounded by beautiful garden areas to bring a sense of peace and tranquility. Fully equipped with professional sound, display equipment, and refreshments can be served following the service in the area adjoining our Chapel, overlooking the elegant private garden.

We Cater for all Cultures and Religions

Gateway Funerals recognises and respects Melbourne's diverse cultural and religious communities, which is why we can offer so many types of services to farewell your loved one. Be assured. We are experienced in caring for people from a diverse range of cultures, so you can feel secure that funeral planning matches your needs.

We're Involved with our Local Community

For many years, Gateway Funerals has been an active member of the community sponsoring many local clubs, sports people and events and fundraising for important community sector projects and drives. We consider our role in the community a privilege and ensure we support any community endeavour that matches our values as much as we can, where possible.

As you are aware, the coronavirus continues to have a significant impact on the funeral industry. We are monitoring this closely on a daily basis and taking advice from our local cemeteries and crematoria, Department of Health and Human Services and keeping in regular contact with our industry colleagues.

In support of the strict government measures and for the well-being of the families that come into our care, our staff and the community, we have taken a number of precautionary measures to help reduce the spread of the virus.

We are following strict hygiene protocols, including regular handwashing, use of hand sanitiser and use of gloves and masks where necessary. We are adjusting our services due to the current regulations set by the government. We can also offer live streaming and recording for those who are unable to attend. Le Pine Funerals

lepinefunerals.com.au

About Us

Le Pine Funerals has over 125 years of experience in tailoring funeral services to the needs and values of families in Victoria, with the first Le Pine funeral home that has served the local community since 1891.

Our funeral directors are well-established and connected in the local communities they serve and proud to uphold the values we believe in Family, Honour, Trust, Respect, Commitment and Loyalty.

With Le Pine funeral homes across metropolitan Melbourne and serving surrounding areas in Victoria, our funeral directors can help you arrange a funeral that truly reflects what life meant to your loved one and what they meant to you.

At Le Pine Funerals, we understand your values and care about them, too, for our values define us all. Our lives. Our loves. Our choices. They make us who we are. And they live on in the hearts and minds of those we love long after the person is gone.

Our history

Le Pine Funerals is an Australian funeral provider that has been serving the people and communities of Melbourne and Victoria since 1891.

When Le Pine Funerals first began caring for families, funerals were all very similar - because that was how people were expected to say their goodbyes. With over 125 years of experience in arranging funeral services for families in Melbourne and Victoria, Le Pine Funerals is well-established in the industry, and our funeral directors are active in their local communities.

Today, each funeral service can be as unique as the person it is for and tailor-made to the wishes and values of the loved ones that are left behind. At Le Pine Funerals, we have made this change in attitudes at the very core of our identity. We can walk you through arranging a traditional funeral or create a completely custom-made service tailored to your specific personal wishes and requests.

Today, many people realize that a funeral service's emotions can stand side-by-side with a celebration of life - and that is what we specialize in.

Le Pine's founding man

In the 1870s, Joseph Le Pine fled his homeland of France and came to Melbourne with his family.

Joseph worked as a cabinet maker - in the early days of funeral services, it was common for coffins to be made by a carpenter, a cabinet maker or a similar artisan. It was also common for the manufacturer of coffins to assist families in making funeral arrangements. By 1891, Joseph was established as an undertaker in the growing colonial city of Melbourne.

From this 1891 beginning, Le Pine Funerals now has 19 funeral homes across Melbourne, each one providing all the care and guidance a family needs to arrange a funeral that offers a unique celebration of the life of someone special to them.

Our culture

Le Pine's funeral directors know that each funeral service is unique and that a funeral that has been personalized to the memories of the deceased and the needs of the family is a funeral that will be remembered for years to come.

Our funeral directors will work beside you to include special themes in the ceremony that reflect the life and values of the person you are honouring, whether it is a traditional, religious service or a contemporary service reflective of your loved one and their tastes.

At Le Pine Funerals, our experience and understanding of the funeral needs of Melbourne's cultural groups and modern funeral practices and our involvement in the local communities we serve mean we can assist clients from a wide range of backgrounds with their funeral arrangements.

We will offer you the time you need to have all your questions answered and for you to think about all of your choices so that we can make the funeral you are arranging one that everyone will remember.

Services

At Le Pine Funerals, we help bring your family together to arrange a funeral service that truly celebrates and honours the life and values of your loved one.

Our funeral directors are with you every step of the way, keeping you informed and guiding you through the arrangements as much or as little as you need.

We can tailor the service, creating a customized funeral that respects, honours and reflects the life that was lived so that mourners go away feeling comforted that the service was reflective of the deceased.

With our professional expertise, we can turn what can be a worrying and stressful time into a well-run event. Our funeral directors are highly skilled in bringing everything together for a funeral service in a very short timeframe while giving you the time to plan exactly the funeral you want. The funeral director will manage all the paperwork on your behalf and liaise with the suppliers for you so that you can focus on yourself, your family and the other guests.

Our funeral directors won't rush you into making decisions. Instead, they will listen, ask questions, and deliver a funeral service in line with your requests and budget.

We can offer innovative solutions and deliver a contemporary funeral, allowing you to celebrate the life lived rather than mourn the death if this is what you want to do. Our funeral directors work with you to ensure you get exactly the funeral service you want.

There is no one size fits all when it comes to funerals, and there are many ways to create an authentic, meaningful service that is relevant and true to the life that was lived.

  • International / Interstate Repatriation

The majority of funeral services these days are broken down into three funeral service types.

Direct Cremation

This process has the Director preparing the remains for burial and having the ashes available for the next kin to collect at the crematorium.

There is No Minister/Celebrant, No Notice, No Service, No Flowers and most importantly, No Family involvement in the process.

Cremation with full or partial service.

This can include Chapel hire, Minister / Celebrant, Organist, Floral tribute, Press notice, Government Medical Officer, a certified copy of Death Certificate, Coffin, Funeral Directors Service Fee and anything else to meet your needs. (Eg. Balloons, Refreshments etc.)

Burial

Generally the most expensive option. The costs of a burial plot can be a major factor.

Suppose there is an existing Burial plot (family member already buried), then with the Burial Rites Holder'sHolder's permission. In that case, that plot may be used (Most cemeteries will allow one plot to be used for two burials).

To ensure that your funeral wishes are met, we have included a helpful information sheet to fill out with your instructions for funeral arrangements.

What to do when a Loved One Dies

When a loved one dies, it is often a confusing and traumatic time. Knowing what to do and how to do it is not always easy. That'sThat's where William Matthews Funerals can help. The first thing to remember is that there is no hurry. Making quick decisions at such a time can result in a funeral service that is not tailored to suit your needs, which can be detrimental to the grieving process. As a funeral service is just as important for the Family and friends of the person who has died, it should be done right.

While quite a lot goes into preparing a funeral, it is important to know that William Matthews Funerals do much of it on your behalf to make this often difficult time as easy as possible. All that a family needs to do is make some important decisions regarding arranging a funeral with one of our Staff. Typically there are three main circumstances in which a person dies:

Who to notify when someone dies

List of some of the organisations that may need to be notified.

  1. At Home:

When a person dies at home, and they are expected to die, the attending nurse is able, in most cases, to verify the death, and the funeral director can be called. If the death is unexpected, the first thing to do is to call their doctor. Day or night, a doctor must be informed before anything else can be done. While the doctor may or may not attend to the deceased at this time, they must confirm that they will issue a death certificate before the funeral directors can come. In some circumstances, when the doctor will not issue a certificate, the police must be called, and the death is reported to the coroner. Usually, however, a certificate will be issued, and the funeral directors can be contacted day or night to come to the Home at a time that suits the Family. At this point, a time to make arrangements can be set.

MOST IMPORTANT if someone dies at home and you can not work out what to do, call your funeral director or William Matthews Funerals on 9739 6868, and you will be helped step by step.

  1. At A Hospital Or Nursing Home:

When a person dies at a hospital or nursing home, the Staff will notify the doctor and contact the next kin. Depending on circumstances, either the Family will notify the funeral director, or the hospital or nursing Home will call them directly to arrange a time to attend. Sometimes, the hospital or nursing home will request a funeral director to be nominated in advance for convenience. The funeral director can be contacted to make funeral arrangements when the Family is ready.

  1. Reporting To The Coroner:

In certain circumstances, such as when a doctor will not issue a certificate, the coroner must be contacted for a post mortem examination. If the person died at home, this is done via the police. If the person died in a hospital or nursing home, the staff would do this on behalf of the Family. While a funeral may be delayed slightly in such circumstances, the funeral director can be contacted immediately, and arrangements can be made. The funeral director will liaise with the hospital, police and coroner on your behalf. If you are unsure about what to do when someone dies or have any other questions regarding this information, you can always contact William Matthews Funerals.

Who to notify when someone dies

When a loved one dies, it can be a very difficult and disorienting time. Throughout this time, reminders emerge as to all the relevant legal, financial, governmental and social groups that may need to be notified. Completing these tasks can be quite time-consuming tasks. For certain things, a copy of the doctor's certificate will be sufficient. However, the full death certificate from the registry of births, deaths and marriages is usually required. William Matthews Funerals will order this certificate for you online at the time of the funeral so that it is processed and mailed out to you sooner.

We are dedicated to providing a dignified, respectful funeral for your loved one. Our Staff will work closely with you to ensure that your requirements are met, and the wishes of your loved one are respected.

We also provide comfort and reassurance at such a difficult and distressing time.

As a funeral service that specialises in Orthodox funerals, we will guide you through the requirements of the Orthodox faith.

We are the only PAN Orthodox service Company in Australia. We look forward to assisting you in creating one last personal memory and farewell your loved one in a meaningful and dignified manner.

We believe that everyone deserves treatment, respect and dignity. We want to be treated that way when we pass away, so we treat you that way.

Our Facilities

We have a small chapel used mostly for viewings and small services, which sits around 80 people. We have the best embalmer in Australia working with us. We use the best coffins and florists in Australia, providing and supplying us with the greatest touches for your or your loved one's funeral.

Our Community

Our community is the heart and soul of this business. We are all active members of the church, local community, sporting and activity groups. We are here for the community as the community has been there for us.

How can we help?

Here at Australian Orthodox Funerals have been in the industry for over ten years. We have helped countless families over those years. We are here for you all day, every day, just call or message us.

No question is insignificant. No request is too much.

We cater for all, and we respect everyone equally. We have a fantastic family here who are willing to go above and beyond to ensure you or your loved one is sent off with love, respect, compassion and most importantly, with god.

Pre-planning

The best thing you can do for your Family is pre-plan and pre-pay your funeral. Why? Because the other companies pray on emotions and will take advantage of a mourning family. By making a choice and putting money aside, you are taking away a hard decision from your Family and ensuring they only pay what is needed, not what they're they're convinced they need.

The other reason to prepay your funeral is that you pay today's prices for tomorrow.

Welcome to Tobin Brothers Funerals

Welcome to the Tobin Brothers Funerals website, which we believe provides extensive, clear and practical information about our funeral planning services and options, as well as details of our after-care support services, funeral notices and events.

This site also features some creative innovations, including a Funeral Notice section with information regarding funerals in Melbourne and Echuca that we are currently or have recently directed, and the ability for friends to send flowers or a message of condolence to those we are serving. The Tribute Candles section even allows people to light an online candle in memory of a loved one or friend.

Our History

Tobin Brothers FuneralsTobin Brothers were founded by brothers Leo, Phone, Thomas and Kevin Tobin in 1934.

The Company flourished in its early years due to the Vision, hard work, and diverse strengths and interests of the four brothers.

Second, third and fourth generation family members have also brought a range of skills and have successfully built on the solid foundation laid by our founders.

The Company's first branch location was in North Melbourne, where we still have our head office and a chapel today. The Company's branch network now spreads to 22 locations across Melbourne, including Rosebud to the south and Sunbury to the north. In addition to our Melbourne facilities, we are also located in Echuca.

As well as expanding throughout Melbourne, in the mid-late 1980s, the Company established operations in Canberra and Adelaide before divesting these businesses in 1995 to focus on its Melbourne operations.

Due to the involvement of the Tobin family in Melbourne's Catholic Community, a large percentage of the funerals the Company conducted in its early years were for Catholic families.

Over the years, however, the Company has developed experience and expertise in the funeral customs of numerous faiths and cultures and today provides service and care to a broad spectrum of Melbourne's multicultural community.

The Company has a long and proud history of:

  • Providing high levels of service and care to our client families;
  • Commitment to the betterment of the wider community;
  • Being a positive and stimulating place to work for our many dedicated and loyal staff.

We have a supportive team with different years of experience and a variation of gender and age groups.

Syd's brother Dave and niece Lindy also work in the Peek Family business.

We've been very lucky to have had, or still do have, lots of terrific friends and dedicated people work with us.

COVID-19 Funerals

Even without a global pandemic, it can be tough when life and death meet. We care for ourselves and honour the person who has died is a gentle and careful balance that needs lots of time and plenty of connection with the people we love. Sadly, much of that has changed under the current restrictions. How and where we can hold funerals. How many people can attend? Having to be physically distant from those that do.*

At Natural Grace, we want to assure you that we can still guide you in creating authentic, sustainable and meaningful funerals for you, your family and your community. We can still have vigils, where you can see your person again; we can still have funerals at selected venues or cemeteries locally or across Melbourne. We can live-stream to those at home or overseas. While social distancing directives still apply, we can always support you in having a meaningful and intimate farewell.

So please talk with us about your needs - we're here for you. Together we will get through this.

Melbourne and Regional Victoria's COVID-19 restrictions continue to change. For current information, these are the official websites:

Department of Health & Human Services: COVID-19 restrictions and coronavirus.vic.gov.au

Social distancing rules apply in all venues, and numbers may be limited by the venue's ability to provide the legal distancing required. Most but not all venues are open for funerals at this time.

Contact tracing is mandatory at each venue, with a QR Code provided. This is linked to the government's central contract tracing, and only your first name and phone number are required. Please help keep us all safe.

Welcome

It is very natural to feel anxious.

It's natural to be unsure whether you feel shocked, sad, angry, depressed, relieved, guilty, fearful, or all of these at once. Coping with these feelings is at the heart of the many ways in which we can truly care for the dead, the dying, and for those who are left behind.

Conventional funeral practices work well for many people but may not provide the scope to be as deeply and personally involved as you may need to be. Fortunately, there are many other options available with end-of-life care, and most people simply aren't aware that ceremonies, budgets, caring for the dead, or even transportation methods are not set in stone.

We believe that providing the opportunity to choose what is right for you, your family, and the people you love is vital. We see from experience that genuine, honest engagement is the best way of honouring the dead and the pain of grief. We know that the law supports families who, for instance, want to keep their deceased at home for some time - as well as many other traditional practices.

We understand that sometimes the best person to care for the dead are the people who knew them and loved them when they were living. That a dying wish can be a chance to leave a cleaner environment as their legacy. That green funerals do exist. That expensive caskets are not compulsory. That we all have the right to be buried in a coffin, a shroud, a simple pine box or a Hawaiian shirt if that's what we want.

Every person mourns differently. At Natural Grace Holistic Funerals Victoria, we are here to help you do just that.

The Stages of The Journey

The process of arranging a funeral can be a daunting and emotional one. To help you find the information you need during this difficult time, we have broken up The Funeral Journey into five key stages. Each stage is designed to provide important and relevant information when you need it most.

Remember that no matter what stage of the journey you are in, our team of dedicated and understanding professionals are here 24 hours a day, seven days a week, to guide and support you in any way we can.

Planning Ahead

While no one wants to think about their death, pre-planning your funeral gives you the peace of mind to know that when the time comes, your family will be guided with professional support, providing a much-needed sense of comfort.

Time Of Death

Few of us are prepared when a death occurs, and we often need support and assistance both at the initial time of death and throughout the funeral planning process and continued support as we come to terms with the loss.

The Funeral Arrangement

A funeral service is a customary way to recognize death and allows us to honour and show respect for the dead and help those left behind to begin the process of grief recovery.

The Funeral Service

A funeral ceremony helps to publicly acknowledge the reality of the death, and when shared with friends and family, it encourages the expression of grief.

After The Funeral

Grief is a natural response to loss. It's important to remember that grief and mourning is a process and not an event.

Planning Ahead

We can make all the information regarding this choice available to you, to make a fully informed decision.

About Us

Nearly 90 years ago, Hollibone Funerals was established in the western suburbs of Melbourne after the owners saw a need for affordable funerals that served every culture in a growing Melbourne's West. Today, it is an Australian family-owned business that exclusively serves Melbourne families as they farewell their loved ones.

Our Company believes in continuity throughout the entire funeral process. So whenever possible, the person who meets with your family to arrange the funeral details will also be at the funeral service to guide your family through. This approach has helped the company gain a reputation of offering a dignified and sincere service for a reasonable cost.

The firm's concern for the community goes beyond the families it serves, training staff of local aged care facilities to help them care for bereaved families.

Our core philosophy is simple; a belief that getting and giving can be one.

Potter's Field Funerals is an independently run funeral company trading as a social enterprise. We provide affordable, traditional and contemporary funeral care to all Victorians with the singular purpose being to support the ongoing work of Bereavement Assistance Ltd, Victoria's only non-affiliated, not-for-profit funeral company.

Bereavement Assistance Ltd was established to provide at-cost and charitable funeral care to members of the Victorian community who, due to financial disadvantage, were not able to afford commercial funeral services.

Founded in 1997 by wedding and funeral celebrant Ted Worthington O.A.M., J.P. and Bernard Morey, Bereavement Assistance Ltd was born out of a desire to relieve the financial burden faced by many of the clients they encountered in their work.

Already faced with the distress of losing a loved one, many clients they encountered were also encumbered with the added stressors of unserviceable debt or, in some cases, the inability to provide for even the most basic of services, resulting in a pauper's funeral.

As the need for support continued to grow, the foundations of the organization started to take shape. With several generous individuals offering the time and financial support, it became necessary to formalize the work that was being done. In 1997, Bereavement Assistance Ltd was incorporated as a not-for-profit public company, and Ted's Vision became the basis of the charter.

Beginning as an organization solely run by a team of dedicated volunteers, Bereavement Assistance Ltd has grown into a professional funeral service provider with ten employed staff members servicing the whole of Victoria.
